Professor B. P. Beirne turned to Gaelic mythology and the legends of his native Ireland for the names of the new genera he erected in the Nepticulidae (B.P. Beirne, pers. comm. to Emmet 1991).The Fomhoire or Fomoir were a race of demonic and malevolent beings who ruled Ireland on several occasions, exacting heavy tribute from the people. They were eventually defeated in battle and expelled for ever (Mac Cana, 1983 cited in Emmet 1991: 44-5).
